National Cyber Crime Unit appoints Dr Jamie Saunders as director

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has appointed Dr Jamie Saunders as director of the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU).

Saunders joins from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), where from January 2012, he was director of international cyber policy.

He was appointed today following an open competition, and will join the NCA board. He will be responsible for implementing the NCCU, which will be responsible for leading the law enforcement effort in identifying and tackling threats from cyber crime.

Saunders began his career at GCHQ, the government’s listening post, and has worked in a range of senior-level cyber-related roles for more than 10 years.

He said: “Having worked closely with NCCU colleagues over the past two and a half years, I appreciate both the skills and expertise of the team, and the scale of the challenge we are facing. I look forward to leading the unit in the next phase of our fight against the scourge of cybercrime.”

The salary for the post was advertised at being “up to £140,0000”.

The NCA is a relatively new organisation that went live on 7 October 2013
